ACPA aims to ensure people’s choices about their end of life care are respected and has an extensive range of online training courses specifically designed to support aged care workers, health professionals and the general public learn more about advance care planning.

End of Life Law for Clinicians (ELLC) is a training program for clinicians to improve knowledge about end of life law to enhance your capacity to manage legal issues in end of life decision-making, leading to improved quality of care and practice. This includes decisions that happen in the ‘last days and months of life’, and the planning and decision-making that happens before this (e.g. before a person has an illness or injury).

The online modules are free and registration is required to gain access to the eLearning on this website.

The Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) has developed an online training program to assist health professionals who provide palliative care in community aged care. Note while designed for community aged care workers you may find the training useful.

The free online training is available to participants by simply creating an account and logging in to Palliative Care Online Training.

The learning modules will help you develop your skills and confidence and covers the knowledge and values needed to communicate and care for people with a life limiting illness and/or are approaching the final stages of the normal ageing process.

The package of online training has two groups of modules and supporting resources. Modules 1 - 4 are based on the best practice guidelines - The Guidelines for a Palliative Approach for Aged Care in the Community Setting (COMPAC). The COMPAC guidelines have recently been incorporated into the palliAGED online resource. 

Modules 5 & 6 are skill modules developed in response to feedback from participants who completed Modules 1-4. The modules offered are listed below and there is a downloadable factsheet (90kb pdf) for the palliative care training course.

The Centre for Palliative Care offers the free online course called Palliative Care: Getting Started for health professionals and is an important introduction to key palliative care concepts required to provide best practice clinical care. There is no registration, but to launch the course you will have to take a short survey used to improve the course. It takes about two hours to complete the online course.

Other professional development opportunities are listed that the Centre for Palliative Care provides for health care workers wanting to increase their knowledge and expertise in palliative care.

This online short course is a free self-paced MOOC developed by Flinders University, Resthaven and AnglicareSA. The program aims to support staff in community aged care to provide high-quality cross-cultural care for clients and to improve team cohesion. Join the program and download the companion workbook.
